Primary education is a fundamental right in India. Every child, whether a boy or a girl, should have access to primary education. Every child has a right to quality education. Parents must understand the importance of education and send their children to primary schools.
Elementary education helps in a child’s overall personality development. It is the time when a child develops his/her character and reaches the learning stage of their life.
Selection of a school is a very important step. Parents must go through the background, activities, and curriculum of the school before admitting them to the school. Parents usually choose the school which is nearby and prefer their comfort over the future of the child, which should be changed.
The primary factor should be the quality of education, not the comfort of the parents.
Importance of primary education
Overall Development
Apart from gaining textbook knowledge, students now experience various other activities like singing, dancing, drawing, and playing other creative games which helps them in having a sharp memory.
Moral Values
Moral values play a very important role in everyone’s life. Primary schools lay down the foundation for children to learn moral values. Schools teach them basic moral values about respecting other people, which helps in building character.
Improves Physical Health
When children go to school, they play outdoor games like cricket, badminton, football, etc., with their classmates and friends, which teaches them new sports, and increases their physical strength.
Reading and social skills
The school is the place where children learn to read and write, which is very important for every one of us. They meet new people, make new friends, and interact with fellow students and teachers, which improves their communication skills.
Challenges faced in Primary Education in India
Every educational system has its advantages and disadvantages. No matter how developed the country is or how good its education system is; there are always some flaws.
India is a developing country with the 2nd largest population in the world. The educational system here has its flaws. Some of them are mentioned below:
Lack of resources
India is a developing country with a population of over 1.2 billion people, with income distributed unevenly. So, people with less income prefer to send their children to work rather than send them to school.
A poor economy is the main reason for the failure of the education system in India. Students do not have access to proper facilities like books and libraries. Schools do not have access to the proper equipment which is required for experiments.
Problematic Quality of Teachers
Teachers are the providers of knowledge. Without a proficient teacher, no student can prosper.
Arjun couldn’t have become a proficient archer if he wasn’t taught by Guru Dronacharya.
In India, teachers are not qualified enough to teach and guide students properly.
Moreover, teachers are not paid enough in most schools. So, they lose interest in teaching in schools and do not teach properly in schools. They start their tuition classes to earn extra income and force the students to attend those. It becomes a burden for poor students.
Lack of Practical Knowledge
The Indian Education System focuses on providing only theoretical knowledge and neglects practical experience. In India, teachers and parents focus only on good grades and do not consider the practical knowledge we get after applying those skills.
The worst thing is that the students generally forget the syllabus learned after giving their examinations.
Excessive Pressure on Students
The education system pressurized students with their scores, assignments, and tests. In this competitive world, the amount of pressure on students is too much. The pressure is sometimes more than they can handle, which leads to anxiety and depression, which has become common these days. But sometimes, the parents and teachers pressure the student to such an extent that he/she gives up and attempts to suicide.
Insights show that over 10000 students took their own lives in the year 2018 due to mental issues, mostly gained because of pressure from schools.
Language Barrier
In India, we speak various languages, but the most often spoken languages are Hindi and English.
The problem is that the main focus is on improving English even though it’s not our native language. And this eventually leads to a lack of numerical competency and local literacy in Indian students. Moreover, in college, most of the presentations, essays, etc., are done in English. So, the students who did primary education in Hindi medium schools lag behind.
How to overcome these challenges?
Building new schools
Building new schools will help in providing education to a larger number of students. Government can provide free quality primary education to all.
Strictness with teachers
Government teachers take their job very lightly as there is no proper check as to whether they are teaching or not.
The government should take proper checks on the teachers and ensure that a qualified person is being appointed as a teacher.
Increase in the pay of teachers
Teachers are paid less, which makes them negligent in their job. Increasing their pay will make them interested in their jobs, and it will lead to quality education being imparted to students.
Change in educational policies
Government should make some changes in their education policies, making it less stressful for students. Also, changes must be made to make education less theoretical and more practical.
Conclusion
In the end, the education system in India is flawed, and of which many students have to suffer. Some students even lost their lives because of the improper system.
The system should focus on providing practical knowledge rather than torturing with pressure.
The government should take measures like providing more funds to open new schools, make some policy changes, keep checks on teachers, and spread awareness among the rural people about the importance of primary education.
