- The film must be of 70 minutes duration and released at least a seven-day run in the Greater Los Angeles area, starting before midnight on December 31
- For the Best Foreign Language Film category, film doesn’t need to be released in the United States. At least 51 percent of dialogues must be in a language other than English, and they must be first released in the country of origin during 14 months from November 1 to December 31 before the awards.
- A film cannot be entered into film and tv categories d; instead, it should be entered based on its original release format.
- A TV program must air in the United States between the prime time hours of 8 pm and 11 pm.
- Actors must appear in at least six episodes during the qualifying calendar.
- Actresses in a tv film must appear at least a percent of the time.
Screening requirements
Active HPFA members must be officially invited to the screening of each eligible film by its distributors. The screening must take place in the Greater Los Angeles area. The screening must also be cleared with the motion picture association, so there are no scheduled conflicts.
